Bosnia and Herzegovina, July 1995: in the space of five days, more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim boys and men are murdered, even though the city is a UN safe zone at the time. More than twenty years later, photographer Armin Smailovic and director Branko Šimić, both from Bosnia and Herzegovina, go in search of the past with their documentary theatre project. "Srebrenica – 'I counted my remaining life in seconds …'" is a project combining documentary reporting, personal fates and the political metalevel that brings the dimensions of the biggest war crime in Europe since the Second World War onto the stage and sheds light on the catastrophic consequences for the political world (dis)order of the thirty years since.
With the engagement of Jens Harzer, the Berliner Ensemble had adopted this successful production from the Thalia Theater Hamburg into its own repertoire.
