Even 2500 years later, there is no end in sight: To the present day, Sophocles‘ "Antigone" has undergone new interpretations in countless translations, productions and adaptations. Bertolt Brecht too was fascinated by this tale of two brothers, who are granted unequal burial rites, and their sister Antigone, who confronts the force of the state to right this wrong. His adaptation became a parable on the responsibility of the individual in the face of great injustice. We take Brecht’s text as an opportunity to ask: What do we believe in strongly enough to make us willing and committed to breaking prevailing laws? Which laws and systems is it even possible to break today? What is the price of freedom? And what are the roots of our enduring need for heroes and heroines?
