The war in Ukraine cannot be reduced to explosions, shelling and the names of the dead. On both sides of the front lives of (extra)ordinary people have been brought together by the broken roads of Donbas. A young woman goes to eastern Ukraine in search of documentary material about the war. But in the "gray zone" of the border area she finds herself caught between both sides, in the in-between, where there is no longer good and evil, where the line between victim and perpetrator is blurred – and where love is fleeting and difficult to comprehend.

In six stories "Bad Roads", which is set and written before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, shows the relationships of people distorted by war and the fractures that will never be healed.

"Bad Roads" premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London. The multi-award-winning production by Tamara Trunova (Left Bank Theatre, Kiev) has already made guest appearances internationally, including at the Radar Ost Festival at Deutsches Theater in Berlin and will be shown at the Radikal Jung Festival at the Volkstheater in Munich in June 2022.

Thanks to the support of the Goethe-Institute a second guest performance in Germany has been made possible. We are delighted to be able to show this performance at the Berliner Ensemble.

Berliner Ensemble.
