WORX

International residency program for young directors

Since autumn 2022 the Berliner Ensemble has been affording young directors the oppurtunity at a residency through their international WORX program. Each season, two directors are selected by a jury to work as Artists in Residence for a year.  During this period the artists are provided with a safe space and given the thematic and implementary freedom to use the Werkraum. Both realize two premieres with freedom of content and form in the Werkraum, accompanied by complementary events and discourse formats.

Here you find the brochure for the WORX-WERKSCHAU 2024/25, where the work of the third-year artists was displayed over the course of a weekend.

Third Year: Malin Lamparter and Lucia Wunsch

Malin Lamparter studied directing at the HfMDK Frankfurt am Main and has already realized various productions on and off the classical stage. Despite excursions into the performative realm, her focus remains on stories and text work.

Lucia Wunsch studied German literature and gender studies in Konstanz and theater directing at the HfMT Hamburg. Lucia Wunsch's theater work repeatedly draws her back to old texts, which she examines for surrealistic elements and the potential of fragmentary narrative styles.

Other Years

  • The first two directors of WORX were Lithuanian director Uršulė Barto and Austrian director Fritzi Wartenberg. They were selected from over 120 applicants by an independent jury. Both share a clear feminist perspective on the structures and mechanisms of the world—and of theater.

    Overview

  • In WORX's second year, Norwegian director Heiki Riipinen and Iranian director Alireza Daryanavard curated the program in the Werkraum, which explored the intersection of activism and performance. The four productions dealt with power structures, queerness, and activist movements from Iran to the German Basic Law.

    Overview

  • In the 2025/26 season, Jules Head from Bristol and Marie Schwesinger from Frankfurt am Main will make the Werkraum their artistic home. Both will realize two premieres each with freedom of content and form in the Werkraum, accompanied by complementary events.
