What is it really about here? The dream of a big modelling career? Who would be that naïve? And who decides who is allowed to dream which dream here and which dream they're not? Director and writer Fritzi Wartenberg invites several other writers and the acting ensemble to explore the biggest pop cultural phenomena in Germany: the fairy tale of a breakthrough as an international model.
This show isn't about the modelling business, it's just pretending to be. The fairy tale of a breakthrough as an international model has been one of Germany's biggest pop cultural phenomena for twenty years now – what a success story! Even though the criticism is no secret: according to critics, the whole thing is sexist and discriminatory, and creates stereotypical images of women, unrealistic ideals for their bodies and "catfights". And yet: the number of fans, even if it has dropped a little, remains very high. Why is it that we apparently can't get enough of watching women fighting to be the ONE – and men now too: mirror, mirror on the wall?! What needs are being satisfied here – for the young and old, right and left, and right across all levels of education? What role does diversity play in this logic of rating people? And if for a moment we assume that the candidates' dream of becoming a model is not in fact naïve, which we might like to believe – then what are their aims?
Director and writer Fritzi Wartenberg invites four other writers and the acting ensemble to think about who is allowed to dream which dream here and which dream they're not – and switches the direction of the gaze: What sort of patriarchal Stockholm syndrome is it that takes hold of us, when we just watch and go along with all this? And when the whole fairy tale set is cleared away: What happens after we wake up?
