The black General Othello is admired by white Venetians as long as he brings them military victories. When he marries the wealthy Desdemona, his happiness seems complete. But his ensign Iago detects the gap left by the devil. He finds a way to exacerbate his general’s fear of being only tolerated and not loved until he loses all reason. Desdemona’s love is no match for the wounds inflicted by everyday racism. The monster jealousy awakens and devours everyone. Shakespeare’s tragedy about the stranger who is both needed and despised strikes at the centre of all debates on discrimination. As long as stigmatisation is reproduced within the structures of society, the injuries will be too deep for one good person to heal.

We regularly present performances of "Othello" with English surtitles. You can find the dates here. Our box office staff will be happy to tell you from which seats you will have a good sight-line to the surtitles. For the best view of both stage and surtitles, we recommend seats in the stalls (Parkett) from row 11, or in the balconies (1. Rang, 2. Rang). Seats in the side boxes have a partially obstructed view.
