Let’s imagine a world where a dictatorship has been legitimised by the will of the people, where self-censorship has reassembled responsible citizens into silent followers, where a homogeneous and exclusive society has developed under the pretence of a promise of individual rights, where there is no good and evil, where the irksome search for sense and meaning has been concluded once and for all. In this society, the naïve question of “But why is everything the way it is?” oversteps all limits of the utterable and thinkable. Guy Montag is a fireman who starts fires instead of putting them out. His mission: To rid the world of books – until a harmless encounter with a little girl unhinges his world and becomes the accelerant of an irreversible change of heart.
