Bruscon, self-appointed actor of national merit, is touring the provinces with the aim of convincing even the most remote corners of the world of this: Theatre is everything, everything is theatre. But he finds hostility towards art everywhere. "The boards that signify the world" are rotten, the children are untalented, the women are hysterical and hypochondriac, the air is fetid. The world has set itself against art and Bruscon’s alleged masterpiece. The Theatre Maker hates the world and wrestles with the theatre – or is it the other way around? Thomas Bernhard’s wicked comedy is both a declaration of love and a swan song for the theatre. Berliner Ensemble’s artistic director Oliver Reese has staged Bernhard’s allegory about art in a world that is hostile towards it with Stefanie Reinsperger as the eponymous Theatre Maker.
