With his Ring des Nibelungen, Richard Wagner took possession of the essentially German Nibelungen-myth and composed a work which was truly revolutionary at the time, with regards to both itsmmaterial and its music. 150 years later, Austrian author Thomas Köck has rewritten the Wagner’s Ring for Berliner Ensemble. He uses set pieces from the original text and interweaves them with his own writing, creating an exciting tension between them. The central topic of the myth is – as Wagner had already discovered – mankind’s ruthless exploitation of nature and the resulting end of the world. Thomas Köck’s text is juxtaposed with music by Max Andrzejewski who has composed overtures for the four parts of the Ring as a musical commentary on Wagner’s own overtures.
