#BEkatzelmacher

The German post-war “economic miracle” required a large and low-pay labour force from abroad. They were called “Gastarbeiter (guest workers)”, a derogatory general term. In Fassbinder’s Katzelmacher from the year 1968, a group of Germans hang around together, killing time. When guest worker Jorgos arrives to offers his cheap and willing services to the town’s small business owner, projections go haywire. The men’s envy of the stranger’s supposed virility provokes them to violence, while the women make him the target of their own desires. It doesn’t take long for the group to decide: The stranger has to go. But business is booming and the business woman hires another guest worker. But the announcement of his arrival triggers an astonishing reaction from Jorgos.
